BENIN CITY: The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has arrested a 21-year-old man, ThankGod Destiny, over the alleged abduction of a four-year-old boy at Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, Edo State.
The Deputy Corps Commander (Operations), Mr Richard Balogun, disclosed this to journalists in Benin City on Thursday, saying that the suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Balogun said the incident occurred on January 4, 2026, when a woman reportedly stepped out with her young son at Ikpoba Hill.
He explained that moments later, the child suddenly disappeared from her sight, triggering panic and a search.
According to the ESSC, the suspect allegedly took the child and hurriedly boarded a commercial bus heading towards King’s Square, Benin City.
“Suspicion arose when the bus driver noticed a clear lack of resemblance between the child and the man,” Balogun said.
He added that the driver questioned the suspect about his relationship with the boy, to which he initially claimed the child was ill and that he was taking him to the hospital.
However, when questioned by a female passenger, the suspect reportedly gave a different explanation, claiming he was taking the child to buy a pair of shoes.
The conflicting accounts immediately caused alarm among passengers in the vehicle
The alarm attracted operatives of the Edo State Security Corps who were on routine patrol in the area, leading to the prompt arrest of the suspect and the rescue of the child, who was unharmed.
Balogun confirmed that the four-year-old boy has since been reunited with his family, bringing relief to residents of the area.
He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“The Edo State Security Corps will continue to intensify patrols and remain vigilant in tracking down criminal elements,” he said.
The arrest has been widely commended by residents, who praised the alertness of the bus driver, the passenger, and the swift response of ESSC operatives.
