BENIN CITY—Commercial activities have rebounded along Sapele Road in Benin City following the ongoing reconstruction of the long-neglected Benin–Sapele Road, bringing relief to traders, transporters and residents who endured years of disruption caused by the road’s deplorable condition.
For businesses operating along the axis, the damaged road had slowed movement, discouraged customers and, in some cases, shut down trading activities, especially during the rainy season when flooding made the area impassable.
With the renewed roadworks, traffic now flows more freely, access has improved and confidence is gradually returning to the once-busy commercial corridor.
Transporter Amadi Great described the transformation as dramatic.
He said the area was previously inaccessible, noting that even past government officials struggled to pass through the road. According to him, the current intervention has restored mobility and eased daily operations for transporters and traders alike.
Second-hand clothing trader, Mrs Romary Obazee, said improved access has translated into better sales.
She explained that customers now reach the market area without difficulty and goods are transported with ease, urging the authorities to ensure that the remaining sections of the road are completed promptly, particularly as the rainy season approaches.
A battery and car accessories dealer, Mr Richard Erahbor, recalled that rainfall once cut off the area entirely.
He noted that the improved road surface has ended frequent flooding and allowed businesses to operate without interruption, describing the development as a fulfilment of government promises.
Also speaking, vulcanizer Mr Osaro Nosa said the road repairs have increased customer turnout and boosted daily income for artisans and small-scale traders along the axis.
Residents further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo and the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for their commitment to the project, particularly the on-the-spot inspections aimed at ensuring quality execution and accountability.
Although reconstruction continues on some sections, several failed portions have already been fixed. From Ring Road through Sapele Road to the bypass, the improved corridor has reduced traffic congestion and revitalised business activities, signalling a gradual economic recovery for one of Benin City’s key commercial routes.
