Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a chieftain of the Labour Party and National Coordinator of the Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC), Dr Kingsley Okundaye, has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to quickly halt the brazen destruction of opposition facilities in Edo State.

Dr Okundaye, who spoke to The Sun through a telephone chat, expressed disbelief over the ongoing political radicalism in Edo State, where the opposition party’s office had been attacked and destroyed to near non-existence.

The chieftain, while highlighting the precarious situation, noted that in the interest of preserving the nation’s hard-won democracy and ensuring a peaceful electoral process, urgent measures should be taken to stop the attacks.

Dr Okundaye stated: “I must address the alarming rise in brazen criminality and the entrenched culture of impunity that threatens the very foundation of our nation.

“The recent incidents of arson and attacks targeting political party offices in Edo State and now Abuja are not isolated acts but symptomatic of a deeper malaise that could undermine the integrity of our upcoming elections.

“Specifically, on the evening of February 4, 2026, suspected political thugs attacked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat located on Ogbelaka Street in Benin City, Edo State. Masked assailants, reportedly arriving in a white van, poured fuel around the building in an attempt to set it ablaze, resulting in parts of the structure being gutted by fire, shattered windows, vandalised party flags and destroyed billboards.

“The attack was thwarted by alert residents and passers-by who raised the alarm, preventing further destruction. ADC officials have condemned this as a direct assault on democracy, alleging political motivations ahead of future elections.

“Compounding these concerns, the Labour Party national secretariat in Abuja was vandalised amid escalating disputes.”

Further lamenting, he highlighted that a similar incident had happened within the Labour Party following the Federal High Court’s ruling on January 21, 2026, which sacked Julius Abure as National Chairman and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Senator Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee as the legitimate leadership. Loyalists of the Abure faction had allegedly orchestrated the attack.

“Thugs reportedly broke into the headquarters at night and caused extensive damage to the premises in an apparent bid to disrupt the transition and intimidate the new leadership.”

He insisted that this incident echoes previous takeovers of the Labour Party headquarters, underscoring a pattern of violence tied to internal power struggles.

These developments, he observed, send a chilling message to all Nigerians: that the electoral season may be marred by widespread violence, intimidation and disruption across the country.

“Such a scenario would be most unfortunate and retrogressive, rolling back the progress we have made in building a stable, democratic society. We must act decisively to prevent this from becoming a reality, as unchecked aggression erodes public trust in our institutions and discourages civic participation.

“As the National Coordinator of the Liberal Progressive and Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC), I hereby call on all relevant law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security bodies, to swiftly investigate these heinous acts. The miscreants responsible for these arsons and attacks, along with their sponsors and enablers, must be brought to justice without delay,” he said.
