Former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has described the recent attack on African Democratic Congress, ADC, leaders in Benin City, Edo State, as a deliberate attempt to discourage political participation.

According to the former NBA President, “the violence sends a dangerous signal that engaging in politics could put citizens at risk”.

The attack occurred on Tuesday during Akpata’s formal defection to the ADC, an event attended by former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Akpata condemned the violence, saying, “This is a very dangerous message being sent to the electorate, that you will participate in this process at the risk of life and limb.”

He also criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for dismissing the attack as an internal party matter, calling such remarks premature and unhelpful.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with leaders across the political spectrum urging security agencies to protect democratic processes and ensure justice for those affected.

Akpata’s comments re-enforces growing concerns over voter intimidation and the urgent need to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
