A political aide to the Governor of Edo State has sparked controversy after warning that only political banners associated with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, popularly known as Asiwaju, should be displayed in the state.
The statement was made by Egogo Emmanuel, who serves as a Senior Special Assistant to the governor.
According to him, anyone who mounts a political banner that does not support Tinubu could face consequences.
“The only banner we want to see in Edo State is Asiwaju. If we see any other political banner, the person who puts the banner will learn new things,” he said.
Statement Triggers Political Reactions
Emmanuel’s remarks have since generated reactions across political circles and on social media, with many Nigerians debating whether such a warning aligns with democratic principles.
Observers say political campaigns and banner displays are common during election periods across Nigeria, often used by parties and candidates to promote their messages.
However, critics argue that restricting political banners could be interpreted as limiting political expression.
Focus on Political Control of Edo
During his comments, the governor’s aide also stressed the importance of securing political support for the president in the state.
“We must take this state for Asiwaju,” he stated, suggesting that political efforts in Edo should be directed toward strengthening support for the president.
Growing Political Tension
The statement comes amid increasing political activity in Edo as parties and supporters prepare for future political contests.
Analysts say such remarks often reflect the growing competition among political actors seeking to consolidate influence ahead of elections.
While the comments continue to circulate online, it remains unclear whether the statement represents an official position of the state government or a personal opinion expressed by the aide.
