The Governor of Edo State has directed the police to press charges following the assault of a student at Igbinedion Education Centre, as authorities intensify investigations into the incident that has sparked widespread outrage.

The state Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, disclosed this while speaking on the breakfast programme Sunrise Daily on Channels Television.

Afegbua said the government had already taken steps that led to the expulsion of the students involved in the assault, adding that the police had been directed to ensure the suspects are arrested and made to face the full weight of the law.

He said the Commissioner of Police confirmed that authorities had been able to track the students involved in the incident.

According to him, the police chief also informed him that the students involved and the main culprit had been asked to report to the police command with their parents by 10 a.m. on Monday.

Afegbua added that although the suspects are minors, the law provides measures for dealing with such cases if they are found guilty.

“Even though they are minors, there are juvenile correctional centres that they can keep them in if the court finds them guilty,” he said.

He further revealed that a five-member committee set up by the Edo State government had already arrived at the school by 9 a.m. on Monday to gather information and begin an independent investigation into the incident and the institution’s disciplinary structure.

The assault, which surfaced in a viral video circulating on social media, has triggered concern among parents and education stakeholders, prompting calls for stronger monitoring and discipline in schools.

Afegbua described the incident at Igbinedion Education Centre as a wake-up call for parents and teachers, stressing the need for schools to maintain strict internal vigilance and ethical standards to prevent similar occurrences.
