The call for the creation of Benin State has gained fresh momentum, with Ambassador Collins Osazee Idahosa, Governor of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Europe Region, intensifying advocacy for the long-awaited demand.
Ambassador Idahosa, a prominent voice for the Benin people, urged the Federal Government to recognize the region’s cultural heritage, historical significance, and economic potential, stressing that granting statehood is long overdue.
“Benin State Is a Matter of Equity and Development”
Speaking on the matter, Idahosa emphasized that “the creation of Benin State is not just about regional pride, but a necessary step towards equitable representation, autonomy, and development for our people.”
He called on the National Assembly to give priority to the Benin State creation bill, noting that it would empower the people of the region and accelerate investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Part of a Wider Movement for State Creation
The renewed advocacy comes as Nigeria witnesses a surge in state creation campaigns, including the push for Anioma State, which has already secured the support of 85 senators and traditional rulers in the South East.
With over 31 new state proposals currently before the National Assembly, the Benin State campaign is being framed not only as a demand for recognition but also as a step towards addressing historical imbalances, strengthening national unity, and boosting regional development.
Why Benin State Matters
Supporters argue that establishing Benin State would:
-
Correct decades of political and economic marginalization.
-
Provide greater autonomy for the Benin people.
-
Promote balanced representation at the federal level.
-
Enhance opportunities for sustainable growth and stability.
As momentum builds, the demand for Benin State has become a rallying cry for self-determination, fairness, and progress — placing Edo at the center of Nigeria’s unfolding conversation on restructuring and national development.
