BENIN CITY, Nigeria – The Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) on Wednesday night led a coordinated emergency response to a fire outbreak at the popular Oba Market in Benin City, successfully containing the blaze without any loss of life.

The Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, who was present at the scene, said the agency received distress calls around 8:15 p.m. and immediately activated both the State and Federal Fire Services.

“Our rapid response system ensured that fire units were deployed within minutes. The collaboration between all agencies was commendable,” Idahosa stated.

Upon receiving updates, the Secretary to the State Government and the Chief of Staff quickly informed the Commissioner of Police, who deployed security personnel to maintain order and assist in rescue operations.

Edo Fire Service, Oredo Council Join Efforts

The Director General of the Edo State Fire Service, Hon. Anthony Ojo, and the Chairman of Oredo Local Government, Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, were also on-site, providing technical oversight during firefighting and recovery operations.

Their coordinated efforts, alongside local traders and first responders, helped contain the fire before it could spread to nearby stalls in the market.

Investigation and Damage Assessment Underway

According to Hon. Idahosa, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with an assessment team set to conduct an on-the-spot evaluation to determine the extent of damage and recommend relief interventions for affected traders.

He commended the swift and professional conduct of all participating agencies, describing the operation as a model of inter-agency collaboration in Edo State.

“This response shows how far we’ve come in strengthening Edo’s disaster management and public safety systems,” Idahosa noted.

Commitment to Ongoing Public Safety

EdoSEMA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with other government agencies and the public to enhance early warning systems, fire safety education, and disaster preparedness across the state.
