BENIN CITY: The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, Mr. Idemudia Iredia Osifo, has called for renewed reforms in the justice system, improved welfare for judicial officers, and stronger synergy between the Bench and the Bar as the Edo State Judiciary marked the commencement of its 2025/2026 Legal Year.

Speaking during the Special Court Session held at the High Court Complex, Benin City, Osifo described the event as one of “sober reflection, rededication, and renewal of commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.”

He praised the Edo State Judiciary for its resilience and intellectual strength, noting that despite operational challenges, it has maintained high standards of legal excellence.

“Edo State has continued to produce sound jurisprudence that enriches our legal system and inspires confidence in the legal profession,” Osifo remarked.

Commendation for Judicial Independence and Support to the Bar

The NBA Chairman commended the Honourable Chief Judge and the Edo Judiciary for their courage, independence, and continued support to the Bar, particularly during the 2025 Law Week celebration. He expressed appreciation for the use of the ceremonial court hall and the hospitality extended to lawyers during the event.

He, however, used the occasion to highlight persistent issues affecting the judiciary, including inadequate infrastructure, delays in justice delivery, and poor welfare for judicial officers.

“Many of our courts still operate in dilapidated buildings without libraries, ICT tools, or adequate seating for judges and litigants,” he noted.

“Justice delayed remains justice denied. Procedural bottlenecks and outdated court rules must be addressed if we must regain public confidence.”

Calls for Judicial Independence and Better Welfare

Osifo emphasized that judicial independence must go beyond constitutional guarantees to include financial and administrative autonomy. He urged the Executive and Legislative arms of government to ensure proper funding and improved working conditions for judges and court staff.

He also stressed that the safety of judges, lawyers, and litigants must remain a top priority, warning that any lapses in courtroom security could undermine the entire justice system.

Technology, Ethics, and Access to Justice

In his address, the Benin NBA Chairman urged the Judiciary to fully embrace technology in court operations through virtual hearings, e-filing, and digital case management systems.

“Technology must no longer be optional in a modern judiciary. Investment in ICT infrastructure will reduce delays, enhance transparency, and improve access to justice,” he stated.

Turning his attention to the Bar, Osifo called on lawyers to uphold professionalism and ethical integrity, noting that public trust in the legal profession depends on the conduct of its members.

“The legal profession is under scrutiny. Allegations of unethical practices and forum shopping persist. The NBA must ensure that lawyers uphold integrity, civility, and competence,” he cautioned.

He further reaffirmed the Bar’s commitment to advancing legal aid and pro bono services to make justice accessible to the poor and marginalized.

“Justice must never be a privilege of the rich. It is a right guaranteed under the law and must be available to all, regardless of social status,” he added.

Bench and Bar: Partners in the Pursuit of Justice

Osifo described the Bench and the Bar as mutual partners working toward the same goal — the advancement of justice and the protection of the rule of law.

“Though our roles differ, our mission is one. The Bench depends on the diligence and candour of the Bar, just as the Bar relies on the impartiality and fairness of the Bench,” he said.

He concluded by urging all legal practitioners to approach the new legal year with renewed passion for excellence, innovation, and service to justice.

“Justice is not a favour we dispense, but a right guaranteed by law. The rule of law remains the bedrock of peace, progress, and democracy,” he declared.

Osifo congratulated the Edo State Judiciary and all stakeholders on the commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year, wishing them a season of efficiency, integrity, and reform.
