A Fresh Storm in Edo Politics
Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has broken his silence following circulating claims referring to him as “Oghionba,” a Benin term meaning enemy of the Palace.
In a video shared online (credit: @ctnaija), Obaseki addressed the controversy with calm composure, urging Edo people both at home and in the diaspora to seek truth rather than rely on political propaganda or social media narratives.
“I have always respected our royal institution. The Benin Palace represents our heritage and unity,” Obaseki stated.
“Anyone trying to create tension between me and the Palace is not doing Edo any good.”
Cultural Weight of the Word “Oghionba”
In Benin tradition, the term Oghionba carries deep cultural significance. It is often used to describe anyone seen as acting contrary to the interest or authority of the Oba of Benin, a revered symbol of unity, spirituality, and history in Edo land.
Being labeled Oghionba is not just political shade — it’s a moral accusation that can influence how a person is perceived within Edo society and the diaspora community.
Reactions Across Social Media
The video has sparked heated conversations among Edo indigenes globally.
While some commenters defended the former governor, citing his development efforts and modernization policies during his tenure, others criticized what they saw as a growing disconnect between political leaders and cultural values.
Platforms like Instagram, X (Twitter), and TikTok have been flooded with hashtags like #ObasekiOghionba, #BeninPalace, and #EdoMatters as Edo sons and daughters express mixed opinions.
Why This Matters to the Edo Diaspora
For Edo people in the diaspora, the relationship between political leadership and royal tradition remains deeply emotional. The Benin Palace is not just a traditional institution — it’s a spiritual anchor and symbol of identity that unites Edo people across continents.
This controversy underscores a bigger question: How can modern governance coexist with ancient tradition in a fast-changing Edo society?
