The Iyowa community in Edo State has been thrown into unrest as residents stormed the streets today to protest the rising wave of kidnappings terrorizing the area. The agitation follows two shocking incidents within just 48 hours — a husband and wife abducted two days ago, and another resident kidnapped yesterday, further heightening fear and frustration among locals.
According to eyewitness accounts, the community has been living in fear as kidnapping cases keep increasing despite repeated complaints to authorities. The residents, armed with placards and chanting solidarity songs, have called on the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to intervene immediately and restore safety.
Residents Demand Government Action
Protesters accused security operatives of slow response to distress calls, insisting that the situation has reached a breaking point. Many expressed fear of moving freely within the community, especially at night, while others lamented that businesses and daily activities have been disrupted due to insecurity.
A resident who joined the protest said the community feels “abandoned and exposed to criminal elements”, stressing that they want intensified patrols, better surveillance, and quick rescue efforts for the kidnapped victims.
Growing Insecurity Raises Concern
The recent kidnappings have sparked renewed calls for a coordinated security operation in Ovia North-East, where Iyowa is located. Community members are urging the state government to work closely with security agencies and local vigilantes to curb the activities of criminal gangs.
Some protesters insisted that without urgent intervention, the situation could escalate into a larger crisis as villagers may resort to self-defense measures.
Call to Governor Monday Okpebholo
Governor Monday Okpebholo is being urged to:
-
Deploy more security personnel to the community
-
Facilitate the rescue of the kidnapped victims
-
Strengthen local security networks
-
Engage community leaders for long-term safety solutions
Many residents believe that decisive action from the government will help restore confidence and stability in the area.
Community Awaits Response
As the protest continues, the people of Iyowa say they will not back down until concrete security measures are taken. Families of the kidnapped victims are pleading for urgent rescue efforts as the atmosphere remains tense and uncertain.
The unfolding situation has drawn statewide attention, with many calling for stronger security architecture to prevent further attacks in Edo communities.
