Nigerian billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Femi Otedola, once again demonstrated his generosity when he fully covered the medical expenses of late reggae icon Majek Fashek during his treatment in London.

In 2021, the Edo-born music legend, whose real name was Majekodunmi Fasheke, was flown abroad after his health deteriorated, sparking concern across Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Reports at the time revealed that Otedola paid over £5,500 (approximately ₦4 million) to cover Majek’s hospital bills.

The intervention came at a crucial moment when the “Send Down the Rain” crooner was struggling with a severe illness that had rendered him unable to perform or cater to his medical needs.

Majek Fashek’s manager, Uzoma Day Omenka, confirmed the development in an interview, expressing deep gratitude to the billionaire businessman for coming to the artist’s rescue.

“We really appreciate Mr. Femi Otedola for his quick and generous intervention. Majek was in a very critical condition, and his help came at a time we had almost lost hope. He paid over £5,500 for Majek’s medical treatment in London,” Omenka said.

Otedola, known for his acts of kindness and philanthropy, had earlier supported several prominent Nigerians facing health crises, including veteran actor Victor Olaotan, who received millions of naira from him for medical care abroad.

Music lovers across Nigeria and beyond hailed Otedola’s compassionate gesture, describing it as a powerful example of giving back to the society and honoring cultural icons who have contributed to the nation’s entertainment legacy.

Born in Benin City, Edo State, Majek Fashek rose to fame in the late 1980s with timeless hits such as Send Down the Rain, So Long Too Long, and Little Patience. His music, infused with deep messages of hope, spirituality, and social justice, earned him global recognition and made him one of Africa’s greatest reggae ambassadors.

Sadly, despite the medical intervention, Majek Fashek passed away on June 1, 2020, in his sleep in New York, after battling a long illness. His death marked the end of an era for Nigerian reggae music.

Fans and industry figures have continued to remember the singer’s extraordinary talent and legacy, while also acknowledging Femi Otedola’s role in ensuring that Majek received proper care in his final years.

Otedola’s generosity has been widely documented over the years. The billionaire has consistently supported causes related to healthcare, education, and youth empowerment, reinforcing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most socially responsible business leaders.

As Nigerians reflect on the late music legend’s journey, many continue to call on wealthy individuals and corporate organizations to emulate Otedola’s example by investing in the welfare of creative artists, especially those who have contributed immensely to the country’s cultural heritage.

Majek Fashek’s music remains timeless, and his story — alongside Otedola’s act of kindness — continues to inspire conversations about compassion, legacy, and the power of using wealth to uplift others.
