Super Eagles Technical Director and interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has addressed widespread rumours suggesting he is being positioned to replace current head coach Eric Chelle.

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, Eguavoen dismissed the claims as “false” and “deeply hurtful,” expressing disappointment over what he described as deliberate misinformation.

Eguavoen Denies Coaching Takeover Rumours

Recent reports in local media alleged that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was considering Eguavoen, along with Ladan Bosso, as possible replacements if Coach Chelle fails to secure World Cup qualification.

However, in a statement released by the NFF Communications Department, Eguavoen firmly refuted the speculation, clarifying that he has no interest in taking over the Super Eagles’ coaching job.

“I feel very hurt by these unfounded rumours because I genuinely have no idea where they originated from,” he said.
“I enjoy a great working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle and have no interest whatsoever in taking over the team. My sincere wish is for him to succeed.”

Focus on Libya Clash

Eguavoen emphasized that the team’s full attention is on their AFCON qualifier against Libya, a game he described as “tough but winnable.”

He urged Nigerians to remain united behind the current coaching staff, noting that such controversies only serve as distractions at a critical stage in Nigeria’s qualification campaign.
