The news of the Edo State Government compensating popular Benin businessman, activist, and hotelier, Tony Kabaka Adun, with a staggering ₦914 million for his demolished hotel has continued to spark heated debates across Nigeria.

Weighing in on the matter, CEO Ab Agric has called out what he describes as the “double standards and hypocrisy” of Nigerians in their reactions to the compensation.

According to him, the outrage pouring in from different corners of the country reflects how Nigerians often apply selective judgment depending on who is involved. He stressed that if such compensation had been awarded to another individual in a different political climate, many of those criticizing would likely have celebrated it.

“Nigerians are double standard, judgmental, and hypocritical. This same people that are shouting today would have praised and justified it if it was someone else they liked. Let’s be honest about it,” Ab Agric said.

The ₦914 million payout is the government’s settlement following a legal tussle over the demolition of Kabaka’s property during the administration of former Edo governor, Godwin Obaseki. While the development has divided public opinion, many Edo residents view it as a vindication for Kabaka, while others insist the amount is excessive.

Ab Agric, however, maintained that the larger issue is not Kabaka himself, but the inconsistency in public reaction:

“We cannot keep shifting the goalpost depending on who is involved. What is wrong should be wrong across the board, and what is right should be right. That is the only way society can be fair and balanced,” he added.

With this statement, Ab Agric joins the growing list of voices shaping the conversation around one of Edo’s most talked-about compensations in recent years.
