The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has read riot act to construction firms, government contractors and other stakeholders over the rising cases of destruction to fibre-optical cable infrastructure in the State.
Akintayo Saidi Ayinla, State Commandant of the Agency also warned utility providers, saying the fibre-optical cables are being destroyed during road construction and other civil works across the State.
He gave the warning while speaking with newsmen in Benin City, noting that fibre-optic networks are critical national assets that underpin Nigeria’s digital economy and security architecture.
The NSCDC Commandant posited that the infrastructure supports seamless communication, powers emergency and security response systems, enables financial and commercial activities, and sustains the daily operations of government institutions.
He opined that any disruption to the facilities poses serious risks to national security, public safety, and economic stability.
Ayinla added that under the Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Order 2024, telecommunications fibre infrastructure had been classified as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
He also warned that damage resulting from unauthorised excavation or construction activities, negligence or failure to coordinate with relevant authorities before civil works, any act leading to service disruption would henceforth be treated as criminal offences and prosecuted accordingly.
“The destruction of fibre infrastructure, whether deliberate or accidental, will no longer be treated as a minor incident. It is a serious offence with legal consequences,” he said.
He, however, urged all contractors and project handlers to strictly adhere to established regulations by conducting proper site assessments, engaging relevant stakeholders before excavation, and adopting safe operational procedures to prevent damage.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intensified monitoring, enforcement, and stakeholder sensitisation to ensure the protection of critical national infrastructure across Edo State.
