The remains of Dr. Solomon Arase, Nigeria’s 18th Inspector General of Police (IGP), have arrived in Benin City ahead of his final burial rites, as tributes continue to pour in for one of the nation’s most respected law enforcement icons.

Arase’s body touched down at 1:25 p.m. on Saturday aboard Nigerian Air Force flight NAF 031, received with solemnity by top-ranking police officers, Edo State officials, and family members.

Dignitaries Welcome His Remains

Leading the police delegation was Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Sulaiman Dogo, alongside the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika. Representing the Edo State Government was Alhaji Gani Audu, Chief of Staff to Governor Monday Okpebholo, who led the state’s officials in paying respects.

Also present were the late police chief’s widow, close relatives, and supporters who stood in silence as the Edo State Police Command mounted a short ceremonial parade in his honor. From the airport, his remains were conveyed to Ebony Mortuary in Benin City.

“A Gentleman, a Leader, a Legacy”

Speaking to journalists, Alhaji Audu described Arase as a rare officer whose service left indelible marks on the police force and his home state.

“He was a gentleman, a lawyer, and a leader who always listened and sought solutions. His passing is a profound loss,” Audu said.

Conveying the condolences of Governor Okpebholo, Audu also hinted at plans to immortalize the late IGP:

“Edo people cherished him. We will work with his family to ensure his legacy is preserved.”

Arase’s Life and Service

Born on June 21, 1956, Arase’s distinguished career spanned decades. Rising through the ranks, he became Inspector General of Police from 2015 to 2016, where he championed intelligence-led policing and strategic reforms.

Until his passing, he served as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), where he continued his push for modernization and accountability in law enforcement.

Widely regarded as a man of integrity, compassion, and professionalism, Arase’s sudden death on August 31 in Abuja shocked the nation.

Final Resting Place

According to family announcements, Dr. Solomon Arase will be laid to rest on October 3 at his residence in Benin City. Friends, colleagues, dignitaries, and admirers are expected to gather to celebrate his life and honor his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s security architecture.
