Edo State in southern Nigeria has produced some of the most influential Christian leaders in the country’s religious landscape. From pioneering Pentecostal movements to internationally acclaimed ministries, pastors from Edo have played pivotal roles in shaping faith, mentoring generations, and impacting communities across the nation and beyond.

Here’s a look at five of the most famous pastors from Edo State — leaders whose ministries have left lasting marks on society and the Christian community:

1. Archbishop Benson Idahosa (1938–1998)

Archbishop Benson Andrew Idahosa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Pentecostal leaders in Nigerian history. Born in Benin City, Idahosa founded the Church of God Mission International, which grew to become one of Africa’s most recognised ministries.

Often referred to as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, Idahosa’s ministry emphasised miracles, evangelism, and leadership development. He also founded Benson Idahosa University (BIU) in Benin City, nurturing future Christian leaders and professionals.

His legacy continues to influence Nigerian Christianity decades after his passing.

2. Apostle Prof. Johnson Suleman

Apostle Johnson Suleman is one of Edo State’s most prominent contemporary pastors. Born in Benin City, he is the founder and Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries International, headquartered in Auchi, Edo State.

Since launching his ministry in 2004, Apostle Suleman has gained national and international recognition for his preaching, prophetic ministry and large Sunday congregations. Omega Fire Ministries has expanded globally, with branches across Africa and beyond.

His influence extends through media, humanitarian outreach, and social engagement.

3. Rev. Dr. Felix Ilaweagbon Omobude

Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude is another renowned pastor from Edo State. Born in Evbuobanosa (Owa) in Edo, Omobude serves as the General Superintendent of Gospel Light International Ministries — also known as New Covenant Gospel Church — headquartered in Benin City.

Before founding his own ministry in 1988, Omobude served on the pastoral team of the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa. He is a respected leader, author, and former President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN).

His ministry and leadership training programs have impacted pastors and ministries nationwide.

4. Bishop Matthew Akhaze Okpebholo

Bishop Matthew Okpebholo is a senior leader within the Church of God Mission International, the denomination founded by Archbishop Benson Idahosa. Born in Uromi, Edo State, Okpebholo has been a long-serving pastor, leader, and mentor.

Ordained by Idahosa in 1989, he later became Bishop Emeritus and has trained and equipped thousands of ministers. Okpebholo also serves on the board of trustees of Benson Idahosa University and is known for his philanthropic work and community outreach.

5. Pastor Charles Osazuwa

Pastor Charles Osazuwa is a notable Edo State pastor who leads the Rock of Ages Christian Assembly International (RACAi) in Benin City. He founded the ministry alongside his wife Deborah Osazuwa, and together they oversee a growing congregation that draws thousands each week.

Beyond church services, Pastor Osazuwa is known for major worship events and praise programs that attract attendees from across the state, including political leaders and prominent figures.

Impact and Legacy

These pastors have played diverse roles beyond pulpit duties — from establishing universities and training future leaders to running humanitarian programs and using media to spread the gospel. They represent a wide range of ministries, from historic Pentecostal movements to modern prophetic and evangelical churches.

Their contributions continue to shape Christianity in Nigeria and affirm Edo State’s influence in the nation’s spiritual landscape.
