One year after the killing of 16 hunters in Uromi community of Edo State, Kano State Government has redeemed its pledge to families of victims and survivors of the deadly attack, providing cash assistance and food items to those affected.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this during a visit to Bunkure Local Government Area, where the victims’ families were assembled.

He said the intervention followed a directive by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after it was discovered that the earlier promise made during a condolence visit had not been fulfilled.

According to him, 16 families of those killed received N300,000 each, while survivors of the attack were given N200,000 each, alongside two bags of rice per beneficiary.

Waiya recalled that the governor had, alongside his Edo State counterpart, visited the community to sympathise with the victims after about 19 persons were killed and 13 others survived the mob attack while travelling.

He explained that while Kano State has now fulfilled its part, the Edo State Government had also assured that compensation for the victims would soon be paid.

“An account has already been opened for the families, and we are expecting that the Edo State Government will release the funds any moment from now,” he said.

The commissioner urged the families to remain patient, assuring them that both state governments were committed to ensuring justice and support for the victims.

He described the incident as a “national calamity” and extended the government’s condolences, praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives.

Waiya also noted that a committee earlier set up by the Kano State Government, led by the deputy governor, had engaged with authorities in Edo State to ensure proper handling of the situation.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the victims and maintaining solidarity with their families in the aftermath of the tragedy.
